The Russian Federation has the second most powerful army and controls a number of states in the Central Asian area. It has a very large population and immense world area. ICC Awards 2010

We were at the 2010 ICC Awards at the Grand Castle in Bangalore.

Cricketer of the Year: Sachin Tendulkar Here’s what the master blaster said about his first ICC Cricketer of the Year award: Better late than never. He was happy that the team achieved the number one Test team ranking in Decemeber and have maintained it since then. He gave credit to all his fans for the support he has which continues to egg him on.
Test Cricketer of the Year: Virender Sehwag- Sehwag who has had a spectacular past 12 months in the longer format of the game rated Tuesday’s win against Australia as the best win of his career. He said it was privelege to part of the team and that the Indian team has set their sights on winning the ODI World Cup in the coming year.
ODI Cricketer of the Year: AB de Villiers – We asked AB if he thought the ODI format was still relevant. He said he loved playing all three formats of the game, and that it was up to the ICC to make changes in the format to keep interest alive.
World Test Team of the Year: Lead by MS Dhoni
The team: Virender Sehwag, Simon Katich, Sachin Tendulkar, Hashim Amla, Kumar Sangakkara, Jacques Kallis, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Dale Steyn, Doug Bollinger.
India’s skipper took the opportunity to speak about his team and said he was proud of his team’s exploits. When quizzed about what India could improve on Dhoni said ground fielding was one area they weren’t brilliant at and could do with some improvement.

Foods That Burn Fat!

n addition to regular exercise, you'll also want to add some fat burning foods to your diet to help trim your waistline.
Foods that are high in protein and fiber are the best kinds of food to eat if you want to burn fat around your middle.
Did you know that it takes more energy to digest protein than it does to digest fat? So the more protein you eat, the more calories your body burns.

Eggs

Eggs are super high in protein and can help you burn that unwanted belly fat.
You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health. That's because a couple of eggs will put you over the recommended daily amount of cholesterol.
Well, more recent studies have shown that dietary cholesterol has a minimal impact on blood cholesterol. Dietary fat is the real culprit. It's what raises your bad cholesterol levels.
However, if you're still worried about your overall cholesterol intake from eating too many eggs, you can remove the yolk and still benefit from the high protein contained in eggs. One of my favorite breakfasts is an egg-white sandwich. Mmmmmm!
Eggs contain the vitamin B12 -- a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Low Fat Dairy Products

According to an article in Obesity Research, women who ate low-fat dairy products, such as nonfat yogurt and low-fat milk, three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
In another study done at Purdue University those who consumed 3 cups of fat-free milk gained less weight over the course of 2 years than those on low calcium diets.
So, not only do dairy products help you strengthen your bones, they can also play an essential role in burning that unwanted body fat.
If you are a regular consumer of milk and other dairy products, that's great (as long as you don't overdo it). Just watch your proportions and perhaps switch over to the low or no fat varieties.

Beans

While beans are often associated with the gastrointestinal disturbances they may cause, they are also very good sources of protein, fiber and iron.
Some of the best kinds of beans to eat are:

• Navy beans
• White beans
• Kidney beans
• Lima beans

And as always, there are those beans that you should limit in your diet - I'm talking about those that are baked and refried.
Refried beans contain tons of saturated fat while baked beans are usually loaded in sugar. Sure, you'll be getting your protein but you'll also be consuming a lot of fat and sugar you don't need.
Here's something else to remember. Be sure to cook your beans thoroughly because our digestive tracks are not adapted to breaking down some proteins that are contained in certain beans.
They are already good enough on their own at stimulating GI activity. You don't want to create any unnecessary turbulence in your belly. ;)
Lisa's Tip: I recently discovered a wonderful vegetable called Edamame (pronounced ed-uh-ma-may). It's an ogranic soybean in a pod often served at Japanese restaurants.
All you do is boil them for three minutes, add a pinch of salt and eat the soybeans out of the pods. They are surprisingly tasty and very good for you. One serving contains 10 grams of soy protein.
The best place to find them is at a store that sells organic foods. (Whole Foods, for example).

Oatmeal

While it may not be the tastiest thing you can eat, oatmeal definitely has some great nutritional qualities.
You may have noticed that many of the oatmeal brands are now boasting that eating more oatmeal will help lower your cholesterol level. That's because oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system.
The best kind of oatmeal to eat is unsweetened and unflavored. While I know it's tempting to select the apples and cinnamon flavor and load it with butter and sugar -- you really lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your bowl of oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
I eat mine with a spoonful of honey (much better for you than sugar) and a handful of raisins or dried cranberries.
Oatmeal is also beneficial in fighting colon cancer and heart disease.

Olive Oil

Certain fats are good for you and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those "good fats". In fact, it's so good that it helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down.
Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat, a type of fat that researchers are finding provide outstanding health benefits. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monounsaturated fat.
So instead of taking a swig of orange juice in the morning, many dieters are picking up a bottle of extra virgin olive oil.

Whole Grains

These days everyone seems to be screaming "No carbs!" It's as if the world has gone no-carb crazy and everyone is running from sliced breads and pastas.
Well the truth is, your body needs carbohydrates. If you go without them completely your body will start to crave them. So it's not a good idea to exclude all carbs because the right kinds are actually good for you.
It's the processed carbohydrates that are bad for you -- the white breads, bagels, pastas, and white rice to name a few.
None of the above foods come out of the ground the way you eat them -- which is usually a bad sign. They've all been processed, thus stripping out all the nutrients leaving you with loads of starch.
The key is to eat "whole grain" foods because they haven't been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
So don't be fooled by a loaf of bread labeled "wheat". Regular wheat bread is still lacking in vitamins and minerals. Manufacturers add molasses to it so it turns brown.
Don't let them trick you. The only kind of bread that's good for you is the kind that's labeled "whole grain".

Lean Cuts of Meat

Turkey and beef are great for building muscle and boosting the immune system, but as always you have to be careful:
Basted turkeys are usually injected with fatty substances while beef contains saturated fat. That Thanksgiving turkey may look good, but it's not always good for you. And if you are going to eat beef, be sure to consume the leanest cuts you can find by looking for "loin" or "round" on the labels.
Salmon and tuna are also good sources of protein. They both contain omega-3 fatty acids which may sound bad, but are actually healthy fats. These two foods are also good for giving your immune system a nice boost and should be consumed at least 3 times a week.

How to
Lie flat on the floor with your lower back pressed to the ground. Put your hands beside your head. Bring knees up to about 45- degree angle and slowly go through a bicycle pedal motion. Touch your left elbow to your right knee, then your right elbow to your left knee. Keep even, relaxed breathing throughout.

1. Lie on the floor and lace your fingers behind your head.
2. Bring the knees in towards the chest and lift the shoulder blades off the floor without pulling on the neck.
3. Straighten the left leg out while simultaneously turning the upper body to the right, taking the left elbow towards the right knee.
4. Switch sides, bringing the right elbow towards the left knee.
5. Continue alternating sides in a 'pedaling' motion for 1-3 sets of 12-16 reps.

Nokia E7

Today, during Nokia World in London, Nokia announced the E7, a smartphone targeted at business users that runs the Symbian^3 operating system.
The Nokia E7 sports a 4-inch polarized AMOLED touchscreen with a 640 x 360 pixel resolution, and offers 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity, GPS, USB on-the-go support, a 3.5mm headphone jack with TV-out, and free Ovi Maps with navigation. It also has an 8 megapixel camera.
The E7 offers both a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. It measures 123.7mm x 62.4mm x 12.6mm (4.8in x 2.4in x 0.5in) in size and weighs 176g (6.2oz).
The E7 also comes with a host of business apps from the Ovi Store preinstalled, such as Salesforce for Symbian, Bloomberg, F-Secure Mobile security, Microsoft Communicator Mobile, and JoikuSpot.
Nokia expects the E7 to be available during the fourth quarter of 2010. Its estimated retail price is 495 EUR ($637).

US Companies Help Pakistan Flood Relief

As the United States and other nations send aid to the flood victims in Pakistan, the private sector is also making significant contributions.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is coordinating relief efforts being made by private American corporations.

Stephen Jordan is the executive director of the Business Civic Leadership Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
“It is one of those cases in which no business is going to be engaged in across the board in everything.  But there are going to be specialists and experts in almost everything,” he said.

Jordan added that U.S. companies have the specific resources to address the many specific needs of disasters like the Pakistan floods.  “A lot of this is self-selecting.  That is the beauty of the private sector.  Individual companies are great at individual things.  So a lot of the pharmaceutical companies, a lot of the health care companies are going to focus on the health care issues,” he said.

“The engineering, construction and heavy equipment companies are going to focus on dams, roads and those kind of things.  The financial services companies are going to help say with small business capacity building, (and) micro-finance,” Jordan said.

Although the death toll has been relatively low, the floods have affected millions of people as it has washed through Pakistan’s economy.  Anne Patterson is the U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan.  She said initial aid trickled in before the magnitude of the disaster was felt.

“I think the response of the international community was anemic at first.  In part because the generous donations to Haiti, in part because the death toll here was mercifully low.”  Ambassador Patterson also said “I think the economic impact is going to be huge because so much of the country was affected.”  She welcomes the help from private companies, and says their involvement will be a boost for Pakistan in the future.

“Pakistan does present very promising investment opportunities for American corporations, who have largely had a very good experience here on the ground in Pakistan,” she said.  “I appreciate that is hard to promote investment when you see a good portion of the country underwater.  But even more urgently now, American investment is going to be required to rebuild the country.”

Ambassador Patterson said “I am convinced that American corporations and entrepreneurs can make money here, even in this environment.”

Stephen Jordan said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been approached to help Pakistan in a number of areas.  “The appeals that we have gotten are for example how we can help out children, how we can help out in terms of education, how we can help out in terms of engineering, public works,” he said.  “They are very concerned about dam failures and flooding affecting highway infrastructure.  So we are looking at engineering issues.  We are also looking at massive, massive health care issues.  They are concerned of course about diarrhea, cholera and all of the water-borne illnesses that you can just imagine,” Jordan said.

Once relief aid is gathered, the U.S. military is on the ground to help spread the donations.  “Distribution is always key in natural disasters like this,” Ambassador Patterson said.  “So I think the military is here.  They are very active.  And they are bringing in people from these isolated areas of the country with the capacity only the United States can provide.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says Pakistan ranks as the third largest recipient of disaster assistance from the business community over the past five years, behind Haiti and China.

Statement by ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat today issued a statement in the light of the ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption during the England v Pakistan Test match at Lord's, which concluded on Sunday.

Mr Lorgat said: "The International Cricket Council (ICC), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are committed to a zero-tolerance approach to corruption in cricket. All allegations of betting irregularities or fixing of matches or incidents within matches are investigated thoroughly by the ICC's internationally respected Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) and this case is no different.

"Currently, senior ACSU investigators are in the United Kingdom conducting enquiries into the allegations directed at some Pakistan players during the recently concluded Test against England at Lord's. That investigation has the full support and co-operation of the ECB and PCB. In addition, ACSU officials are assisting London's Metropolitan Police with their criminal investigation.

"Led by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the ACSU is the most respected and experienced such unit in world sport and it has at its disposal a robust and far-reaching Anti-Corruption Code that all ICC Members support and are bound by.

"The integrity of the game is of paramount importance. Prompt and decisive action will be taken against those who seek to harm it. However, the facts must first be established through a thorough investigation and it is important to respect the right of due process when addressing serious allegations of this sort.

"Make no mistake ? once the process is complete, if any players are found to be guilty, the ICC will ensure that the appropriate punishment is handed out. We will not tolerate corruption in this great game."

Trott and Broad save England with record stand

Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad hit centuries at Lord's on Friday to save England with a record eighth-wicket stand after Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir had blown away the early batting in the fourth and final test.

Trott batted all day to reach 149 not out, adding 244 with Broad (125 not out) to lead England to 346 for seven in their first innings at the close of the second day.

Broad, in an innings of genuine quality, scored his maiden test century and the first by an England number eight since John Murray against West Indies in 1966.

His partnership with Broad is an England record for the eighth wicket against Pakistan, and the second highest against any country.

The hosts, 2-1 up in the series, were reduced to 47 for five in the morning session after resuming on 39 for one. Only 12.3 overs were bowled on Thursday

Eighteen-year-old Amir picked up six for 73 in 23 outstanding overs. He took four wickets in eight balls without conceding a run from the Pavilion end, dismissing Alastair Cook (10) and Kevin Pietersen (0) caught behind from consecutive deliveries.

Paul Collingwood was then trapped lbw for a duck and Eoin Morgan was smartly caught at second slip by Yasir Hameed, also without scoring.

It was the first time the England number four, five and six had failed to score in a test innings.

Amir became the youngest player to capture 50 test wickets when Matt Prior was caught behind for 22 from the fourth delivery after lunch.

Graeme Swann was then caught in the gully by Azhar Ali off Amir for yet another duck.

England, on 102 for seven, were in danger of succumbing for fewer runs than their previous lowest score of 130 against Pakistan.

Instead Trott and Broad combined in a memorable partnership which flourished as the Pakistan bowlers tired and the sun finally broke through to sap any remaining moisture from the pitch.

Trott moved confidently on to the front foot to drive through the covers and the mid-wicket area while Broad played like a top-order batsman.

He flicked Amir for a six over square-leg and played the shot of the day with a blazing off-drive from the same bowler.

Trott, who scored 226 in the Lord's test against Bangladesh this year, reached his century, courtesy of overthrows which raced to the boundary, in five minutes short of five hours with 13 fours.

Broad surpassed his previous highest test score of 76 and moved serenely to his hundred from 159 balls with nine

Azhar Ali's Test-best 92 put Pakistan in a strong position against England at the close of the second day of the third Test at The Oval here on Thursday.

And before stumps there was still time for Pakistan to dismiss England captain Andrew Strauss (four), caught at second slip by Yasir Hameed off left-arm quick Mohammad Aamer.

England closed on six for one in their second innings, 69 runs behind, with struggling opener Alastair Cook nought not out and nightwatchman James Anderson unbeaten on two.

Ali's innings was the cornerstone of Pakistan's 308, which gave them a first innings lead of 75.

Pakistan's poor catching had been a key factor in their falling 2-0 behind in this four-match series.

But on Thursday it was England who paid the price for missing a routine chance when Strauss, at first slip, put down Mohammad Asif when the No 11 was on four and Ali on 66.

Pakistan were then 278 for nine but, with Ali seizing on anything either over-pitched or short from Stuart Broad, the last-wicket pair added 38 runs.

The 25-year-old Ali's second fifty in five matches at this level, after he made 51 in Pakistan's three-wicket win over Australia at Headingley last month, was not a lone hand.

Veteran batsman and former captain Mohammad Yousuf marked his return to international cricket with a well-made 56 before he became Graeme Swann's 100th Test wicket, having put on 69 with Ali.

Former captain Yousuf was playing his first Test since January following the overturning of an "indefinite ban" imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board after he led the side on their winless tour of Australia.

But shortly before tea he drove too early at a Swann delivery and was caught and bowled to end a 108-ball stay featuring eight boundaries.

It meant Swann had taken his 100th wicket in 23 Tests.

He was the third quickest off-spinner to the landmark behind India's Erapalli Prasanna (20 Tests) and South Africa's Hugh Tayfield (22).

Umar Akmal elegantly late cut medium-pacer Paul Collingwood for four to give Pakistan a first innings lead.

But next ball, setting off for a single that was never on, he was run out by Eoin Morgan's direct under-arm hit from cover for 38 featuring four fours and a straight six off Swann.

Ali and Umar Akmal put on 57 for the sixth wicket.

Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Aamer then both fell cheaply to Broad, bowling with the new ball.

Ali, on 62 when Asif came in, was left just short of a maiden Test hundred when the seamer drove Swann straight to Anderson at mid-off.

Swann led England's attack with four wickets for 68 runs in 27.2 overs.

Pakistan, bowled out for record low scores against England of 80 and 72 in crushing defeats by 354 runs and nine wickets in the first and second Tests respectively, had failed to add to their overnight score of 48 for one when recalled opener Hameed was caught behind off Finn.

Swann also struck with his second ball on Thursday when Pakistan captain Salman Butt, in at No 4 after previously opening this series, was caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior at the third attempt after edging an intended cut.

The off-spinner then removed stubborn nightwatchman Wahab Riaz for 27 when the impressive debutant, who took five wickets on Wednesday, was lbw on the sweep to the first ball of Swann's second spell.

But Ali and Yousuf made sure Riaz's two hours of resistance was worthwhile.

US Marines arrive to help Pakistan flood survivors

A shipload of U.S. Marines and helicopters arrived to boost relief efforts in flooded Pakistan on Thursday, but the prime minister told The Associated Press his country needs more international help to cope with one of the worst natural disasters in its history.
The United Nations warned the crisis was far from over, saying dams in Sindh province could still burst in the coming days. More rain fell around the country, and monsoon season is forecast to last several weeks still.
Spokesman Maurizio Giuliano said U.N. officials roughly estimated that up to one-fourth of the country is or had been affected by the floods, though those areas were not necessarily under water.
The government has been sharply criticized for a slow and patchy response to the floods, which has killed 1,500 people left and left an estimated 7 million people needing emergency assistance, their homes destroyed, damaged or inundated with muddy water and unlivable.
President Asif Ali Zardari — whose decision to go ahead with a trip to Europe when the disaster began was condemned by many — made his first visit to victims of the disaster on Thursday, according to state-run Pakistan Television that gave few details of the trip.
The United States has pledged $71 million in emergency assistance to the country, which is key in the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban as well as stabilizing neighboring Afghanistan. It has also deployed the military to help, as it often does after major disasters.
The USS Peleliu arrived off the coast near Karachi on Thursday along with helicopters and about 1,000 Marines.
The helicopters will fly to flood-hit areas and rescue stranded people and deliver food and other supplies.
An Associated Press reporter flew with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani over parts of Punjab, Sindh and Baluchistan provinces. Seen from the air, the extent of the disaster was clear, with the aircraft often flying for many minutes over a mostly flooded landscape.
"All I say is that we need more help from our international friends," he said. "We need more such helicopters because the magnitude of the destruction was far more" the earlier government assessments.
"I also urge my own countrymen and women to help their brothers and sisters," he said.
Flood survivors already short on food and water began the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, a normally festive, social time marked this year by misery and fears of an uncertain future.
While millions of flood-affected people were performing the fast, Mufti Muneebur Rehman, one of the country's top religious scholars, said victims living in difficult conditions dependent on charity could skip the fast and perform it later in the year.
"I cannot disobey God, so I am fasting as it is part of my faith no matter what the conditions are," said Fazal Rabi, 47, who was staying in a tent village in Akbarpura in the northwest, where many people are especially devout.

Mr Zardari was nicknamed 'Mr 10%'

Asif Ali Zardari has long been one of Pakistan's most controversial political figures and yet he has risen to its most powerful office - the presidency.
Since becoming Pakistan's president in September 2008, Mr Zardari has presided over an increasingly fragile country, a growing militant threat, possible economic meltdown and mounting political instability.
Among the many opponents ranged against him are a number of estranged former allies, who include one of the country's most popular politicians, Nawaz Sharif.
Mr Zardari has negotiated many a dramatic turn since his marriage 20 years ago to the charismatic former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
He was thrust into centre stage of current political developments when Ms Bhutto was assassinated in December 2007.
Since then he has led her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) through successful general elections and worked with former political enemies to force President Pervez Musharraf to resign.
Prison sentences
And yet, before Ms Bhutto's death, Mr Zardari's public image was so bad that the PPP kept him out of the public eye as much as possible during the campaigning for national elections in February 2008. Mr Zardari was seen as a political liability.
He spent several years in jail on charges of corruption. He was labelled "Mr 10%".

Benazir Bhutto's death propelled Mr Zardari on to centre stage

He found himself in major trouble in 1990 when he was accused, among other things, of tying a remote-controlled bomb to the leg of a businessman and sending him into a bank to withdraw money from his account as a pay-off.
Those charges were never proved. The PPP had then accused the country's powerful intelligence apparatus of maligning Mr Zardari to damage Ms Bhutto's image.
In 1993, when then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan sacked the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Mr Zardari was escorted from the prison straight to the presidency where he was sworn in as a minister in the interim government.
Later, the PPP won the 1993 elections, and Mr Zardari moved with his wife to the Prime Minister House in Islamabad where he lived for the next three years.
In 1996, when another president sacked the PPP government, he was arrested and charged with a number of offences including the murder of Mir Murtaza Bhutto, his wife's brother.
He was later charged, along with his wife, and convicted in a kickbacks scam involving a Swiss company, SGS.
But a mistrial was declared by Pakistan's Supreme Court following a major scandal involving the accountability bureau and the judge who had issued the verdict.
Pakistan's judiciary has not had a reputation for acting independently of the government when it comes to high-profile cases, especially of a political nature.
His last prison sentence lasted eight years until 2004, during which time he says he was tortured.
It ended as the then General Musharraf was engaged in protracted negotiations with Benazir Bhutto, then in self-imposed exile, for some form of political reconciliation.
'Personal bravery'
Mr Zardari resolutely stood by his party as well as his wife - although at times he disagreed with the politics of both.
His friends say this was entirely in character and that no-one can deny his personal courage.
A close friend recounts an incident in the 1980s when he was still a polo-playing and horse-riding bachelor.
"We were on a cross-country ride in Karachi when one of our company, the daughter of a German diplomat, fell into a bog with her horse.
"There were 40 of us. We all stood around stunned except for this one man, Asif Ali Zardari, who jumped in and pulled out the girl and then the horse as well.
"During all this time, he could have drowned at any time himself."
'Fall guy'
Asif Ali Khan Zardari was born in Karachi to Hakim Ali Zardari, head of one of the "lesser" Sindhi tribes, who chose the urban life over rustic surroundings.
Asif grew up in Karachi and was educated at St Patrick's School - ironically also the alma mater of Pervez Musharraf.

His father did relatively well - the young Zardari's main claim to fame was that he had a private disco at home, helping him gain the reputation as a "playboy".
When he married Benazir, the icon of the anti-establishment cause in Pakistan, he became "the designated fall guy", a close family friend says.
"Zardari knew this and accepted it. He walked into the marriage knowing it would always be about her, and never about him."
After his release from prison in 2004, Mr Zardari kept a low profile, undergoing medical treatment in the US.
He suffers from diabetes and a spinal ailment which prevents him from moving around without the help of a walking stick.
He also worked to re-establish his relationship with his children after years of separation.
Benazir appreciated her husband's loyalty, knowing that "despite his failings, he always stood by his family no matter what", one of her confidants says.
This was on display following Ms Bhutto's assassination, when he kept the family together.
He forcefully rejected demands for a rebellion against the government, saying the integrity of Pakistan was sacred to the PPP.
But in recent months he has been accused both from within and outside the PPP of promoting his own cronies at the expense of party veterans who had stood by Mrs Bhutto through thick and thin.

When Lady Gaga was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton. And, she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit.
It’s no wonder that little girl from a good Italian New York family, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady Gaga.
“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady Gaga, 23, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where Gaga – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits -- would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange.
“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says Gaga, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”
That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: Gaga is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20^th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady Gaga has earned the right to reach for the sky.
“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says Gaga, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/KonLive/Interscope). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.”
On The Fame, it’s as if Gaga took two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock with a splash of disco and burlesque and generously poured it into the figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her Fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”
The CD’s opener and first single, “Just Dance,” gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy, “Boys Boys Boys,” Gaga doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.”
“Beautiful Dirty Rich” sums up her time of self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says Gaga. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, “Paparazzi” might come off as a love song to cameras, and in all honestly, Gaga jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.”
Gaga shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queen-influenced “Brown Eyes” and the sweet kiss-off break-up song “Nothing I can Say (eh eh).” “‘Brown Eyes’ is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.”
For the new tour for this album, fans will be treated to a more polished version of what they saw (and loved) at her critically acclaimed Lollapalooza show in August 2007 and Winter Music Conference performance in March 2008. “This new show is the couture version of my handmade downtown performance of the past few years. It’s more fine-tuned, but some of my favorite elements to my past shows – the disco balls, hot pants, sequin, and stilettos – will still be there. Just more fierce and more of a conceptual show with a vision for pop performance art.”
It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the old-fashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and self-promotion.
